Primula bullata var. forrestii

This used to be known as Primula forrestii but due to recent genetic research has been reclassified. It is an unusual primula that it grows in the wild on crevices and ledges of limestone rock in North-West Yunnan. Have a look at the wonderful photos of Pam Eveleigh's Primula World gallery.

It was introduced by Forrest from seed in 1906 and has been in cultivation ever since. It has several golden flowers with an orangey centre on one stem that grows up to 25cm. It is a robust plant that forms quite large clumps. It is best grown in an alpine house, kept almost dry in winter and protected from severe frosts. Water well as the flower buds start to form and repot annually. It can also been grown in a rockery if protected from excess wet in the winter.
